Urban Culture: Street Furniture Shaping Vibrant City Hotspots
Across New Zealand’s growing urban centres, well-designed outdoor spaces are transforming commercial and hospitality districts into vibrant city hotspots.
In many urban developments, the difference lies not in the buildings themselves but in the quality of the spaces between them. Streetscapes, plazas, hospitality zones and gathering areas are increasingly designed as destinations in their own right.

Supporting local economy and identity
When a place inspires people to meet and linger, nearby cafés, restaurants and retailers reap the benefits.
Research shows that well-designed public spaces increase foot traffic, extend dwell time and support surrounding businesses. Studies have found that that improvements to public spaces within town centres can boost commercial trading by up to 40 per cent and generate significant private sector investment.
These environments also help create a sense of place. A thoughtfully crafted plaza or gathering space can become the recognisable heart of a precinct, helping define its character and identity. As renowned Danish architect and urban design consultant Jan Gehl famously observed:
“A good city is like a good party. You know it’s working when people stay longer than really necessary, because they are enjoying themselves.”

Why benches and seating plays a critical role
Urban design research shows that people stay significantly longer in places where comfortable benches and seating are available. When places to sit are introduced, optional activities such as socialising, eating and relaxing increase dramatically.
Different seating forms support different behaviours:
- Curved seating encourages conversation and informal gathering.
- Straight benches help define pathways and edges while providing places to pause, wait or sit alone.
- Platform-style seating creates relaxed hubs for individuals and groups to spread out.
- Tables and integrated seating are for ideal for shared meals, games and meetings.
A variety of benches and seating also gives people choice in how they use a space. Whether seeking social interaction or solitude, different seating patterns cater to more preferences, purposes and needs.

Integration and flexibility
Modular furniture systems provide enormous design flexibility and choice in how a space is enjoyed. The NZ-designed and made Legend and Liffiton collections both offer endless possibilities in shapes, sizes and configurations – including seats, benches, platforms, planters and table settings. Selected pieces in the Legend range also offer integrated Qi charging and LED lighting for convenience and safety, and to extend use into the night.
Exciting new modular collections are also being released by global leaders, including European designs offered exclusively through Urban Effects. TreeWire seating, featured in our Shape the Space look book, uses curved steel wire modules to create bold seating features within plazas and public spaces. The modular forms can be arranged in flowing or geometric layouts, combining contoured comfort with durable steel construction.
The iBox Collection by Metalco combines seating and integrated planters in flowing forms, creating distinctive “islands” for catching up and relaxing. Made from lightweight High Performance Concrete, they feature a recessed base for easier ground maintenance and allow both freeform and linear compositions.
Integrated planters do more than introduce greenery. They help improve air quality, reduce “heat islands”, and shape attractive and sustainable spaces. Seating built into planting areas allows people to relax within nature while helping cool the surrounding microclimate.
With so much variety within these collections, designers can create spaces that feel cohesive and contemporary while providing versatility for different people and activities across day and night.

Highbrook Crossing: the heart of a busy business park
Auckland’s Highbrook Business Park is home to 140 companies – and its new plaza has become its social heart, drawing workers, lunchtime crowds and visitors. A range of Legend seating designs and custom pieces respond to the space’s distinctive angles, creating inviting places to meet and relax while driving foot traffic to nearby cafés and businesses. Curved benches wrap around planting beds, different-sized tables are ready for meetings and meals, while distinctive zig-zag seating follows the geometry of surrounding screens and planters.

Breathe life into the urban outdoors
Outdoor, mixed-use spaces play an increasingly critical role in modern urban life. When seating, tables, planting, lighting, amenities and architecture are thoughtfully integrated, outdoor environments can create a sense of belonging while helping fuel economic growth. Planned and delivered well, these spaces come alive with activity – and develop the energy and character that draw people back again and again.
