Waverley Revitalisation & Main Street Upgrade

Waverley’s main street has undergone a transformation, turning it into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly destination that reflects the region’s rich cultural heritage and civic pride – as the home to the famous Kiwi, the winner of the 1983 Melbourne Cup.

Guided by a co-design approach, the Waverley Revitalisation & Main Street Upgrade was driven by a shared vision: to create a welcoming town centre that encourages people to gather and connect, rather than simply pass through.

As part of this renewal, Urban Effects was tasked with an essential yet often overlooked element – supplying the litter bins that will help the council and community maintain a clean and inviting environment. Our MODO60 and MODO100 Stainless Steel Tilt Rubbish Bins were selected for not only their functionality, but also their ability to be customised to include a custom laser cutout. Each of the 13 bins feature a design depicting native flora – Kowhai, Pohutakawa, Manuka, and Harakeke; elevating them from standard urban infrastructure to artistic statements that celebrate the story of the land.

In addition, the outer and inner frame of the bins were crafted from contrasting tones of stainless-steel and colourful powder coat finishes which highlight the striking flora cutouts. These bespoke details ensure the bins enhance the amenity and aesthetic of the main street beyond their role as waste receptacles. And prove that even the most practical facilities can complement the larger design vision of a project.

Installed along Waverley’s main street for convenient waste disposal and collection, the bins also embody sustainability in the way they were made. Manufactured locally by Urban Effects using processes that minimise waste, they reflect our commitment to supporting councils and communities to express their environmental and cultural values through a product’s design as well as its construction. The success of this project reinforces how attention to even the smallest details can help shape meaningful public places – where every element plays a role in fostering local pride and strengthening community identity.
