University of Otago – Union Street, Dunedin

Set in the heart of Dunedin on Aotearoa New Zealand’s South Island, the University of Otago is consistently recognised as one of the world’s most beautiful university campuses. Renowned for its blend of historic architecture, contemporary facilities and carefully curated landscapes, the campus provides inspiring spaces for learning, connection and wellbeing.

As part of an upgrade to a corner of the campus on Union Street, the University wanted to create an inviting space where students and staff could relax, socialise, study or enjoy a quiet moment between classes.

The Urban Effects team worked closely with the University’s Senior Architect, Campbell McNeill to select New Zealand designed and made park furniture that complemented the desired aesthetic while providing the durability required in an active campus environment.

The finished space features our Parkvale Pedestal Table Settings and a customised version of our Legend Epic Straight Seat, set amongst natural stone features, permeable paving and landscaped planting.

To create a cohesive look and feel across the space, the standard Legend seat design was adapted so the hardwood timber battens run lengthwise across the seat and backrest (as they do on the Parkvale table). The table settings and seats were also finished with black powder coated frames and trims.

This level of detailing demonstrates the flexibility that local manufacturing can offer. Working collaboratively with Campbell, we were able to refine the design of the Legend seat to incorporate the requested modifications and deliver a bespoke solution quickly and efficiently.
