At St Thomas of Canterbury College in Christchurch, Lighthouse Trust’s pilot Te Whare Rama Pod brings together a nature-inspired environment and practical support to help students find calm, regain perspective and return to learning.

A place to find calm

Anna and Kent Gibbons founded Lighthouse Trust in memory of their son Lucca, with a mission to help young people navigate life’s challenges and reach their potential.

Te Whare Rama means “The House of Light.” The name reflects the Trust’s vision of a welcoming sanctuary where students can pause and reset before the pressures of their day become overwhelming.

Natural materials, planting, and sensory elements help shape a calming environment. Within the Te Whare Rama Pod, students can take a quiet moment, explore practical tools for emotional regulation, or connect with a trained Pod Coach.

Three guiding principles bring the Trust’s purpose to life:

• Guide: Support from trained Pod Coaches who listen without judgement and help students regain perspective.
• Empower: Practical tools and experiences that build emotional agility and resilience over time.

Together, the setting and support offer students a place to find their footing, with skills they can carry into the classroom and beyond.
