Massey University, Palmerston North
A new outdoor hub at Massey University’s Manawatū campus is creating more opportunities for students, staff, visitors, and whānau to gather throughout the year.
Designed as more than a simple covered space, the new installation provides a comfortable and welcoming destination for sharing meals, catching up with friends, taking a break between classes, or spending time outdoors. Integrated lighting extends the use of the area into the evening, helping create a greater sense of comfort and safety after dark.
At the centre of the project is the Neo Shelter – Medium, which provides generous protection from the elements while maintaining an open and inviting connection with the surrounding campus environment. Its contemporary form complements an existing relaxation area featuring hammocks, helping transform the wider space into a cohesive destination where people are encouraged to pause, connect, and stay a little longer.
The shelter is paired with an Urban Contour Double BBQ, finished in Grey Friars powdercoat with a durable stainless-steel benchtop. Together, the products create a practical and versatile outdoor setting that supports everything from casual lunches and social gatherings to larger campus events.
To celebrate the completion of the project, the installation team experienced the space firsthand with a classic Kiwi barbecue. The area has also become a valuable gathering place during Massey University’s Open Days, providing students and their whānau with an opportunity to meet, relax, and experience campus life for themselves.
The project was installed by local builders Gibson and Oliver Limited, with lighting completed by Ace Electrics. Their work has helped create a robust, functional, and welcoming space that can be enjoyed across changing seasons, weather conditions, and times of day.
By combining shelter, lighting, cooking facilities, and nearby relaxation spaces, Massey University has created an outdoor environment that supports connection and belonging across the campus community.
