Better Placemaking Starts with Early Street Furniture Planning 

Planning furniture as part of the wider space

Street furniture is sometimes treated as one of the final details in an outdoor project. However, seating, tables, shelters, bins, bike racks and other amenities play an important role in placemaking by shaping how people move through, use and experience a space.  

Bringing these elements into the planning process early helps ensure they support the wider design and the needs of the people who will use the space. Early planning allows furniture to be coordinated with surfacing, foundations, services, access routes and landscaping.  

It gives project teams more time to consider product dimensions, installation requirements, lead times and opportunities for customisation. Material selection, coatings, fixings and installation methods can all affect the lifespan and ongoing performance of a product.  

Considering these factors early helps project teams balance appearance, cost and long-term value while reducing the risk of avoidable maintenance or replacement.
